Backpack Program A Success Thanks to generous support from the Marietta Community Foundation, United Way Alliance of the Mid Ohio Valley, local churches, area businesses, and community members, Washington-Morgan Community Action’s backpack program was able to continue to help those in need during the back to school rush. The backpack program is a supplemental program that provides area children, K-8, with a backpack and school supplies. Parents must come in and apply for the program, but each child in the family can receive a backpack. This year the agency has given away 235 backpacks. Community Action Senior and Community Services Director, Carrie McNamee said, “Children in Washington County would not have received needed school supplies without the support of the community.” The program lost its usual funding this year, and continuation was uncertain. With the help of donations from local community organizations, churches, businesses, and community members through backpack drives, the program was able to continue and be just as helpful as in past years. The program usually is only able to give away backpacks to K-8 students, but this year the agency was able to provide 75 backpacks for high school students. The backpack kits contained folders, notebooks, filler paper, a ruler, binders, pencils and pens, a highlighter, and dividers. The agency still has a few backpacks left, so if you or your family is in need of a backpack with school supplies, please stop by Washington-Morgan Community Action for an application.
