For those not familiar with Head Start, it is a free preschool program for income eligible families with children ages three to five. Its number one goal is to prepare children for kindergarten. One of the ways that Head Start reaches this goal is by providing an environment that enhances the necessary cognitive and social skills needed to develop a love for learning. Washington Morgan Community Action Head Start has been a part of this community since 1967. In January of 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared The War on Poverty in his State of the Union speech. A few years later, Washington Morgan Community Action had the program under its umbrella. Washington Morgan Community Action is one of 1,700 agencies in the United States that provides Head Start Services. Head Start is offered in every US state and territory. It is also offered in migrant farmworkers' camps and in more than 155 tribal communities. Head Start and Early Head Start Programs provide services to over a million children every year. In the 2015/16 school year alone the WMCAP Head Start provided services to 326 families and 366 children. Washington Morgan Community Action Head Start has centers located in Belpre, Malta, Marietta, and New Matamoras. There is also an option of having children taught in their own home each week for an hour and half. The benefits of Head Start are numerous. Head Start uses a curriculum that is designed to prepare children for kindergarten by concentrating on language, science, math, creative arts, physical health, and social-emotional development. The program also provides special services for children with disabilities. Head Start also offers evaluations of each child's progress throughout the school year. This allows for teachers and parents to monitor and plan for the child's individual needs. Head Start is a family oriented program, encouraging whole family involvement. The program includes parents and the family in all that it does, from family nights to volunteering in the classroom, it makes sure the parents are a part of their child's learning experience.
